Nikon announces the Z 28mm f/2.8: Small, light, and inexpensive

The Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8, Nikon’s most compact, lightweight prime Z-mount lens to date, has been released – and at just $299, it promises outstanding value for money.

The 28mm f/2.8 may be aimed at casual shooters, but don’t let that fool you. In addition to an impressively low price (only matched among Z lenses by the 40mm f/2) and unrivaled portability, it packs a set of high-level features that will satisfy demanding photographers and videographers alike.

At 28mm, you can shoot a little bit of everything. On a full-frame body, you’ll be perfectly positioned to capture environmental portraits, on-the-go street shots, beautiful travel images, fun event photos, and more. And on a crop-sensor body, the lens will stop just short of the standard “nifty-fifty” focal length, perfect for portraits, street photos, travel photos, and walk-around photography.

The f/2.8 maximum aperture will make for high-quality shots in low light, especially when combined with Nikon’s in-body image stabilization technology. Expect to capture sharp indoor event photos (e.g., images of your kids at a birthday bash), as well as night portraits and even the occasional evening landscape.

While we haven’t yet gotten our hands on the 28mm f/2.8, Nikon’s prime lenses are optically amazing: tack sharp, with limited fringing and other issues. And the lens works for videography as well as still photography; Nikon claims that the 28mm f/2.8 was “developed with consideration for video recording” and offers “extremely quiet operation, effective focus-breathing compensation, and stable exposure.”

The 28mm f/2.8 is available in two styles: standard black, consistent with Nikon’s current Z lenses, and Special Edition (SE). The latter version sports a different focus ring grip as well as a silver ring, and was originally announced alongside Nikon’s retro Z fc mirrorless camera.

So if you’re looking for a snazzy little lens that you can take everywhere – one that features a truly unbeatable price – check out the 28mm f/2.8. It’s currently available for preorder, and I highly recommend you grab it while supplies last!
