Sigma announces the 20mm f/2 lens

Sigma has unveiled its latest I Series lens, the 20mm f/2 DG DN | Contemporary, designed to provide a high-quality, well-designed option for E-Mount and L-Mount shooters.

According to Sigma, the 20mm f/2, like all I Series lenses, offers a “combination of superb optical performance with a level of compactness that is perfectly suited to smaller and lighter modern mirrorless cameras.”

In other words, the lens is both small and sharp, making it highly useful for travel photographers, street photographers, walkaround photographers, and even on-the-go landscape shooters

Sigma didn’t skimp on build quality, either. The 20mm f/2 boasts a metal body, as well as dust and splash resistance; if you frequently work in inclement weather, or you simply prefer gear that will last for years, then this lens is worth a look.

You may also appreciate the external aperture ring, which allows you to adjust the aperture without fiddling with your camera dials- useful for cinematographers, but also nice for those who prefer a tactile shooting experience.

(Personally, I’m a fan of aperture rings; in my experience, they make you feel engaged with your camera.)

The lens’s wide focal length makes it a viable option for environmental portraits, though street and event photographers will also undoubtedly appreciate a 20mm lens, especially one featuring such a wide maximum aperture. As Sigma points out, the 20mm f/2 can even work for astrophotography thanks to the f/2 aperture and outstanding optical quality.

And while 20mm lenses rarely produce impressive bokeh, the f/2 aperture will help to artfully blur the background (always useful when capturing portrait shots, close-up shots, and more).

Like most of Sigma’s lenses, the 20mm f/2 is very reasonably priced. You can grab it for $699, while Sony’s current 20mm lens (albeit with an f/1.8 maximum aperture) goes for $899.

So if you’re a Sony or L-Mount shooter and you’re hunting for a travel-ready wide-angle lens, the 20mm f/2 is a great pick. While the lens won’t begin shipping until late February, it is currently available for preorder.

Now over to you:
